Web search, URL fetch and tools in chat
Last updated 15 Sep 2026Overview
A model on its own only knows what it was trained on. ToRun gives it three ways to reach past that: web search, fetching a page you name, and the tool catalog it can call during a turn.
The Web Search page
Web Search lives in the AI Assistants menu on web and in the Tools hub in the mobile app. It has three tabs:
- Search — a query against the web, returned as titles, links and snippets, five results at a time. Asking for more results costs one more search, and the button says so before you press it.
- Deep research — a multi-step, cited investigation rather than a list of links. It costs considerably more than a search and is gated accordingly; see the Deep Research page for what it produces.
- Fetch URL — hands the platform a specific address and gets the readable text of that page back.
Every tab keeps a history, and the pills at the top show how much of your search allowance is left. The mobile screen and the web page read the same service, so history and allowance agree wherever you look.
Search inside a conversation
You do not have to leave the chat. When a question needs current information the assistant can run a search itself, mid-turn, and answer from what it found — with the sources attached to the answer so you can check them. A link you paste is fetched the same way.
Tools
Beyond search, the assistant can call tools during a turn: generating or editing an image, writing a note, adding something to a list, setting a reminder, looking up a place on the map, starting a workflow. You do not enable these one by one — the assistant picks the tool the request needs, and what it did is visible in the turn.
There is a practical ceiling on how many tools one turn can carry, and asking for too many at once is refused with an error that says so rather than quietly dropping some.
What it costs
A search is billed per call, a fetched page is billed as the call it is, and a tool that invokes a model is billed like any other model call — one entry per call in your ledger, at the published rate. This is why the "more results" button names its price: a second page of results is a second search, not a free scroll.
