Renewable energy is likely to become the main source of electricity in many parts of the world over the next few decades. Solar panels and wind turbines are already becoming cheaper, more efficient, and easier to install. However, the transition is not simply a matter of building more of them. It also depends on energy storage, stronger power networks, flexible demand, and other sources that can provide electricity when needed. One key challenge is that sunlight and wind vary with the weather and time of day. Solar panels produce no power at night and less during cloudy conditions, while wind turbines generate less when winds are weak. Energy storage can help manage these changes, although it is only one part of the solution. Batteries store electricity when supply is high and release it later. They work like a water tank: the tank fills when water is plentiful and provides a reserve when the flow drops. Power lines that connect different regions, flexible energy use, and dependable sources of electricity can also help balance the system. Different forms of storage serve different needs. Common grid batteries are often used to shift electricity over several hours and respond quickly to changes in supply and demand. Pumped hydropower uses extra electricity to move water uphill, then releases it through turbines when power is needed. It can store large amounts of energy, but it requires suitable geography and infrastructure. Hydrogen may also play a role. Renewable electricity can be used to produce hydrogen, which can then serve as a fuel or industrial material. Because converting electricity into hydrogen and back wastes some energy, hydrogen may be most useful in industries that are difficult to power directly, rather than for everyday electricity storage. Power grids will also need to change. A grid is the network that carries electricity from power producers to homes and businesses. Traditional grids were built mainly around a limited number of large power sta
