TL;DR: A two-year rooftop garden pilot produced strong food and environmental benefits, but revealed infrastructure and volunteer-retention challenges that should be addressed before expansion.
- Twelve unused rooftops were converted into community gardens.
- Volunteers grew roughly four tonnes of vegetables, with most donated to two local food banks.
- Planted roof surface temperatures were up to 18 degrees lower on summer afternoons.
- Stormwater runoff from participating buildings fell by about a third.
- Costs exceeded plans because waterproofing had to be replaced on five roofs before planting.
- Two sites closed early after volunteers moved away.
- The report recommends expanding the program to forty roofs, hiring a part-time coordinator, and inspecting roof membranes before accepting sites.
Reader should know: The pilot’s benefits were significant, but expansion costs may remain uncertain unless roofs are thoroughly assessed in advance.
