Habit: Read for 30 Minutes Every Evening
Anchor Trigger
After I finish dinner and put away my dishes, I will sit in my reading spot and open my book.
2-Minute Starter
Read one page or for two minutes. Once started, continue if able. On difficult evenings, completing the two-minute version still counts as keeping the habit alive.
Friction Removals
- Choose the next book before finishing the current one.
- Keep a bookmark in place—no searching for where to resume.
- Use a physical book, e-reader, or audiobook depending on convenience.
- Keep a backup book available on your phone or e-reader.
- Set a recurring evening reminder labeled: “Open the book—just 2 minutes.”
- Prepare water, glasses, and reading light in advance.
Environment Tweaks
- Create one comfortable, well-lit reading spot.
- Leave the current book open or visible on the chair or bedside table.
- Put the phone on Do Not Disturb and leave it across the room.
- Keep the television remote and laptop out of reach during reading time.
- Use a 30-minute timer to define the session clearly.
Streak-Break Recovery Rule
Never miss twice. If an evening is missed, the next evening requires only the two-minute starter. Resume the scheduled duration after opening the book. Do not compensate with an extra-long session.
30-Day Ramp Schedule
- Days 1–3: 2 minutes minimum; continue up to 5 minutes if desired.
- Days 4–7: 5 minutes.
- Days 8–12: 10 minutes.
- Days 13–17: 15 minutes.
- Days 18–22: 20 minutes.
- Days 23–26: 25 minutes.
- Days 27–30: 30 minutes.
The two-minute starter remains valid on unusually busy, tiring, or disruptive evenings.
Accountability Mechanism
Use a shared habit tracker with one accountability partner. Send them a nightly 📖 after completing the session—or the two-minute recovery version—and review progress together every Sunday.
