Likely causes, ranked
- Stuck power or firmware state — especially if LEDs, fans, or the keyboard briefly activate. A hard reset may clear this state. Source: HP, “Laptop Won’t Turn On? 9 Fixes to Try Before Calling Service.”
- Power-delivery problem — discharged battery, faulty/loose adapter, damaged charging port, or battery failure. HP says a laptop that remains unresponsive while plugged in commonly points to the adapter, charging port, or battery. Source: HP.
- Laptop is running but the display is not responding — likely if lights or fans operate but the screen remains black. Both HP and Wisetek recommend separating display failure from total power failure. Sources: HP; Wisetek, “Laptop Won’t Turn On After Update? Here’s What to Do.”
- Windows update damaged startup — likely if the manufacturer logo appears but Windows does not load. HP recommends Windows Recovery, Safe Mode, update rollback, or System Restore in this situation. Sources: HP; HP Support Community.
- BIOS/firmware problem — possible if the update included firmware or if the machine cannot proceed through its initial hardware startup. BIOS reset is suggested after simpler recovery steps. Source: HP Support Community.
- Hardware failure coinciding with the update — motherboard, storage, memory, battery, or charging circuitry may have failed. The timing alone does not prove that the update caused it. Hardware checks are recommended after power, display, and recovery steps fail. Source: HP Support Community.
