The blackout struck on the hottest night of the year.

At 9:17 p.m., every light in Greenhaven vanished. Air conditioners died. Elevators stalled between floors. Across the city, glowing windows became black squares against the summer sky.

Except at one small house on Alder Street.

Twelve-year-old Maya Chen looked up from the model wind turbine she was building at the kitchen table. Its blades turned beneath a fan, sweeping narrow shadows across her notebook.

“Why do we still have power?”
